How to Test Your Mouse for Click Latency

Is your mouse lagging? Double-clicking when you only click once? Stuck switches? Here's how to diagnose the problem with free browser tools in 5 minutes.

Symptoms of a mouse problem

  • Random clicks register as double-clicks in-game
  • Mouse feels "laggy" or "delayed"
  • Clicks occasionally don't register at all
  • Movement feels choppy
  • Buttons feel different than when new (stiffer, mushier, or scratchy)

The 5-minute diagnostic

Step 1: Check polling rate

Open our Mouse Polling Rate Checker and move your mouse continuously inside the test area for 5 seconds.

What you're looking for:

  • A stable reading near your mouse's rated rate (most gaming mice: 1000Hz).
  • "Stability" score above 90%.
  • No big dips to 250Hz or 125Hz.

If stability is bad: Move the dongle closer to your mouse (wireless), plug directly into a rear motherboard USB port (wired), and update your chipset drivers.

Step 2: Test click consistency

Open our CPS Test and run several 10-second trials. Note your average CPS each time.

Healthy behavior: CPS varies by ±5% between attempts.

Problematic: If some attempts are dramatically lower (e.g., 7 CPS then 4 CPS), the click switch may be inconsistent. Try harder clicks — if that fixes it, the spring is weakening. If not, the switch may be dying.

Step 3: Test click latency

Open our Click Latency Test and run 20 rounds. Take the average.

Typical results: 200–280 ms for healthy adults on healthy hardware.

If your average is much higher than usual: Check display settings — make sure your monitor isn't running at a low refresh rate. A 60Hz monitor adds ~8ms of display latency vs a 144Hz monitor.

Step 4: Test keyboard rollover

Step 5: Visual + tactile inspection

With the mouse unplugged, look at the switches through the mouse feet or shell (some mice are see-through). Press each switch and look for:

  • Sticky/return issues — the click doesn't return cleanly
  • Visible debris — crumbs or hairs in the switch
  • Wobble — the switch tilts in the housing

Diagnosing the double-click issue

Double-clicks when you only click once are the most common mouse failure. It's almost always caused by:

  1. Worn mechanical switches. The metal contact inside deforms after millions of clicks. Common after 2–3 years of heavy use.
  2. Debris in the switch. Dust or skin oil causing a brief contact bounce.
  3. Switch bounce. Genuine electrical bounce on cheaper switches.

Quick fix attempts:

  • Blow compressed air into the switch area
  • Click the button rapidly 50+ times to dislodge debris
  • Open the mouse and inspect the switch — if you see physical damage, replace it (most modern mice use hot-swap or screw-in switches)

Replacement options:

  • Kailh GM 8.0 switches for hot-swap compatible mice — long life, crisp feel.

  • Huano switches for Razer mice.

For mice with optical switches (Razer V3, Logitech G Pro X Superlight), double-clicking is much rarer because there's no metal contact to deform.

When to replace vs. repair

Replace if:

  • The mouse is more than 3 years old and showing switch issues
  • The scroll wheel encoder is failing (jumps or scrolls opposite)
  • The cable frays or wireless connectivity is unreliable
