Understanding Polling Rate

Polling rate is how many times per second your mouse reports its position to your computer. Measured in Hertz (Hz), a 1000Hz mouse reports its position 1000 times per second — once every 1 millisecond. Higher rates reduce the gap between movements, which can feel smoother, especially at high DPI.

Common Polling Rates

  • 125 Hz: Office mice. 8ms between reports — fine for productivity, feels laggy for FPS.
  • 500 Hz: Mid-range gaming. 2ms between reports — good compromise.
  • 1000 Hz: The gaming standard. 1ms between reports. Recommended for competitive play.
  • 2000–4000 Hz: Modern premium mice (Razer, Logitech, Endgame Gear). Requires high-end CPU.
  • 8000 Hz: Cutting edge (Razer 8K Hz, ASUS ROG). 0.125ms reports. Measurable but mostly imperceptible improvement over 1000Hz for most users.

Why Stable Polling Matters

It's not enough for a mouse to average 1000Hz — it should report consistently at 1000Hz. Dropouts to 500Hz or 250Hz can feel like micro-stutters. The "Stability" metric above shows how close the actual values stay to the average. 95%+ is excellent; below 80% suggests USB polling issues or a flaky mouse.

How We Measure

We sample mousemove events and divide the event count by elapsed time over rolling 1-second windows. This reflects what your computer actually receives, which is the only thing that matters for feel. We can't read the hardware's "advertised" rate directly — but if your mouse claims 1000Hz and we measure 1000Hz, that's a match.

Why Your Measurement Might Differ from Advertised

  • USB port bandwidth: Some hubs and front-panel headers can't sustain 1000Hz.
  • Operating system: macOS caps some mice at lower rates. Windows 11 with raw input works best.
  • Mousepad / surface: Optical sensors need motion to generate events. Move the mouse at least 10 cm/s.
  • Driver settings: Some software force-locks the rate. Razer Synapse and Logi G Hub expose this.

How to Increase Your Polling Rate

  1. Open your mouse's driver software (Razer Synapse, Logi G Hub, SteelSeries GG, etc.)
  2. Find Polling Rate settings — usually under Performance or Hardware
  3. Select 1000Hz (or higher if supported)
  4. Plug your mouse directly into a rear motherboard USB port, not a hub
