CPI vs DPI: What's the Difference?
The short answer: nothing. CPI (counts per inch) and DPI (dots per inch) describe the same measurement โ how many pixels your cursor moves per inch of physical mouse motion.
The technical distinction (that doesn't matter)
Strictly speaking, DPI is a printer/scanner specification โ how many dots of ink a printer places in an inch. CPI is the correct term for mice โ how many sensor "counts" are produced per inch of motion.
But because marketing departments like round numbers, and "DPI" rolls off the tongue, both terms get used interchangeably. A "1600 DPI mouse" and a "1600 CPI mouse" produce identical cursor movement.
What does it actually mean?
A 1000 CPI mouse moves the cursor 1000 pixels when you move it 1 inch (2.54 cm) physically. At 1600 CPI, 1 inch moves the cursor 1600 pixels. Higher number = more sensitive.
On modern high-refresh monitors, sensitivity is personal preference. Most competitive FPS players use 400โ800 CPI. Casual users typically 800โ1600. Productivity users with multi-monitor setups may go higher (2000+) to reduce arm motion across screens.
The marketing trap
Some manufacturers brag about 30,000+ CPI sensors. In reality:
- Most operating systems and games don't benefit from CPI above ~3000.
- Windows has a cursor acceleration setting that complicates things further.
- Higher CPI without a faster sensor = jitter and inconsistent tracking.
- Sensor quality at any CPI matters more than max CPI.
Flagship sensors (HERO 2, Focus Pro 30K, PixArt PMW3950) are accurate across their entire range. Cheap sensors become erratic above 5000โ8000 CPI.
What "true CPI steps" means
Some mice only have a few CPI options (e.g., 400, 800, 1200, 1600, 3200). These are typically rounded to convenient numbers from the sensor's native resolution. - Low sens (1:1, 40cm/360ยฐ): 400 CPI at 2.0 in-game sens, or 800 CPI at 1.0 in-game sens. Best for tracking and consistency.
- Medium sens (20cm/360ยฐ): 800 CPI at 1.0 in-game sens, or 1600 CPI at 0.5 in-game sens. Best for general play.
- High sens (10cm/360ยฐ): 1600 CPI at 0.5 in-game sens. Best for fast flicks and 180ยฐ turns.

Verify your CPI is what you set it to
Some mice misreport their CPI when set to certain values, especially under load. To verify:
