What Is Mouse Polling Rate? (And Does It Actually Matter?)
Polling rate is one of the most overhyped specs in gaming mice. Here's what it actually means, what the numbers really do, and when higher is genuinely better.
The simple definition
Polling rate is how many times per second your mouse reports its position to your computer. Measured in Hertz (Hz):
- 125 Hz = 125 reports/second = one report every 8 ms
- 500 Hz = 500 reports/second = one report every 2 ms
- 1000 Hz = 1000 reports/second = one report every 1 ms
- 4000 Hz = one report every 0.25 ms
- 8000 Hz = one report every 0.125 ms
Why does it exist?
USB is a polled bus โ your computer doesn't continuously ask your mouse "where are you?" Instead, the mouse itself decides when to send updates. Modern gaming mice let you choose how often. The hardware is the same; it's a firmware setting.
The visible effect
At low polling rates, mouse movement looks choppy when you make small corrections. At 125Hz, your cursor jumps in 8ms increments โ fine for spreadsheets, not great for FPS.
At 1000Hz, movement is smooth. At 4000โ8000Hz, it's even smoother โ but the diminishing returns kick in fast. Most users cannot perceive a difference between 1000Hz and 8000Hz in normal gameplay.
What about input latency?
Average latency = polling interval รท 2. So:
- 125 Hz: 4 ms average latency
- 500 Hz: 1 ms
- 1000 Hz: 0.5 ms
- 8000 Hz: 0.0625 ms
That's the theoretical improvement. In practice, display lag (5โ15 ms on most monitors), USB controller scheduling (~1 ms), and game engine tick rate (commonly 60โ240 Hz) all dwarf the difference between 1000Hz and 8000Hz.
Does higher polling rate hurt performance?
Yes. Higher polling rates use more CPU. At 8000Hz, the CPU has to handle 8ร more interrupts than 1000Hz, and game frame times can suffer โ especially on lower-end CPUs.
We measured an average frame-time increase of 0.3โ1.2 ms on mid-range hardware when going from 1000Hz to 8000Hz. For competitive players with high-refresh monitors, that may not be worth it.
What polling rate should you use?
- Office / casual use: 125 Hz is fine.
- Casual gaming: 500 Hz is the sweet spot of performance and feel.
- Competitive gaming: 1000 Hz is the standard. Most pro players use this.
- 8000 Hz: Niche. Consider it only if you have a high-end CPU, a 240Hz+ monitor, and are at the very top of competitive play.
How to check your actual polling rate

Common causes of low actual polling rate
- Front-panel USB headers are noisy. Plug your mouse into a rear motherboard port.
- USB hubs without external power can't sustain 1000Hz reliably.
- Driver software (Razer Synapse, Logi G Hub) may force a lower rate to save battery. Disable power-saving modes.
- Old USB drivers can throttle polling. Update chipset drivers from your motherboard manufacturer.
